Last Thursday I made a trip over to Daley Plaza for their weekly Farmer’s Market and stumbled upon a Flag Day celebration that included a naturalization ceremony. Watching immigrants from all over the world become American citizens was incredibly inspiring and an important reminder that the liberties and rights we take for granted as American citizens are privileges people all over the world fight for daily.
One of the speakers told the crowd that part of being a citizen is taking the responsibility seriously: voting, being a good neighbor, staying informed, and getting involved in the community. No matter how long you’ve been a citizen, it’s an important message to take to heart. After hugging their family and posing for pictures, the first thing most of these new citizens did was register to vote.
